- Schools Projects

The Schools Project provides Hackney schools with activity days at the club, learning about all aspects of the canal and its environs - history, geography, natural habitats etc. The Club also provide canoeing as part of the PE curriculum as well as watersports 'Fun days'.

For the whole day a class, up to 36 people, use the club site, narrowboats, classroom, specialist teachers and collected resources. It is useful and very popular with both school teachers and pupils. All the work is linked to the National Curriculum.

A flexible approach to extensions to the project can be accomodated such as the "Green Rafts" project with Laburnum school next door to the club. This involved the designing and building, with the pupils, six rafts which were launched with great ceremony. They were then anchored at Haggerston Bridge and planted with aquatic plants. Today they are still there thriving for all to enjoy.

Another was to run a project over two months where whole classes of up to 36 people, in our two narrowboats and the Club launch, were taken through the Islington Tunnel to the London Canal Museum. The parties, swapped boats at various stages, steered the boats and worked the locks.

Please contact the club with other ideas or for further details.
